At the end of the coastal lagoon stretch is the headland of Porto Pino, with the homonymous seaside resort and its long stretch of fine sand. It is the fourth island of Italy by size and is made up of volcanic and chalky rocks that alternate with large beaches and intimate coves.
The imposing rock formations off the southern coast are quite unusual and include the small islands of Vacca, Vitello and Toro.
Sant'Antioco has ben inhabited since the most distant times - its earliest settlements date back to the pre-Nuragic period - and it is one of the most ancient Phoenician foundations of Sardinia (8th century B.C.), with remains that are visible all throughout the town.
In the historic centre, the Basilica of Sant'Antioco hosts the Paleochristian catacombs, derived from a Punic hypogeum, in which the spoils of the Saint were found in 1615.
